Some people confuse a tech pack designer and technical designer thinking they are the same thing. But they are definitely not. The skillset needed to be a technical designer is VERY different from the skills needed to be a tech pack designer.

    Thank you so much for this insightful video! I learned a lot, especially about the versatile roles of a Technical Designer. Your point about FIT being crucial really hit home-if it doesn’t fit, those garments likely won’t leave the shelves, this shows the importance of a Technical designer in the design to production process. I also always thought that designing or creating tech packs was solely a Technical Designer's responsibility, so it was enlightening to discover that a Tech Pack Designer can be a specialized role on its own. Greetings from Nigeria. ❤

    • @383design
      @383design 7 дней назад

      Hi, thanks for watching and commenting! I appreciate you:) It really depends on what you want to do. "Digital design" is just an overarching term for any design happening with a computer. So are you designing garments/accessories/footwear? Are you designing print and pattern or graphics? Are you creating tech packs? Are you creating garments that will only live in the digital realm/the metaverse? Once you get clear about that, you'll have a better idea of which software you should learn (or learn first). To give you a general idea: 3d software (CLO3D, Style3D, Browzwear, etc): great for visualizing your designing in a 3 dimensional way; great for designing for the metaverse Vector software (Adobe Illustrator, Corel Draw): great for flat sketching and technical sketches (which you'll need if you are creating a tech pack to have a manufacturer make a physical sample for you); can also be used for graphics and textile design Pixel based software (Photoshop, Fresco, ProCreate): great for freehand drawing; many use for initial sketches and/or fashion illustration; also great for textile and graphic design

    This is no fault of your own, but that's not an acceptable tech pack for a manufacturer. In my 10y experience, manufacturers didn't - or only begrudgingly - accept 3D mockups and renders. They need images of the garment "laid flat" because that is how they work with the final ready piece. In order for the manufacturer to accurately realize your design, they need accurate and exact depictions of the components, even the stitch.

    • @383design
      @383design 20 дней назад

      @@thedevo01 Hi, thanks for watching and commenting! I have over 20 years experience in the NYC fashion industry, so yes, I’m very familiar with flat sketches (and I’ve also got lots of other videos about them as well as tech packs on my channel:) This video is showing what CLO, a 3D software, generates. However, not sure if you didn’t watch to the end of the video or if you missed it, but I do mention that I believed a flat sketch is clearer and that I wasn’t convinced that just having the 3d rendering on the tech pack is enough. I’ve been hearing people say they’re using them, but I’m still not convinced.

    Hm...so do we count as "couture" if we are selling only made to measure? The prices range low to high. There are sewing machines involved, but of course humans operate them. Is there a term for us?

    • @383design
      @383design 26 дней назад

      Hi, thanks for watching and commenting! Just having a business that sells made to measure doesn't automatically make it couture. And the fact that you're using machines would usually be a disqualifier, regardless of who is operating them. Couture is almost all (if not completely) hand made. Couture also usually has an element of fantasy, artfulness, and experimentation. If that's what you're creating, maybe. (There's still that machine vs. hand made issue, though;) And the price points are usually VERY high. (A low price point might be $10K.) More than likely, your business would classified as 'bespoke' or 'custom', not couture.

    Your are right. The creativity needs to be applied to the business idea too, like marketing, strategy, etc. However, the biggest hurdle is finance. How to actually get the money to start... It takes money to make money. I have a niche, amazing and unique art, massive creativity, and passion. What I don't have is finance and it's frustrating.

    • @383design
      @383design 28 дней назад

      Thanks for watching and commenting! And you're right, finance is also an issue for many designers. But even past finances, there are a lot of designers who haven't done the work to create the brand strategy and understand who they're selling to or if what they are selling is something their customer will buy. So even if you get financing, you may not be allocating it in the best way.

    Hello Michelle, I stumbled onto your video while I was looking for a way to create a mesh tool design with a fold using a cloth pattern just like the 4th one with red one you have i intro @ 1:24, it was in an article in the digital newsletter MacRumors, the article had a design with a folded cloth with the Apple logo it was written on Friday June 14, 2024 5:07. it was titled “ Japan passes law to allow third-party app storage on the iPhone”. I'm not sure if it was created entirely in Adobe illustrator or in conjunction with another app like Blender. Thanks

    Thank you for the tutorial. I wanna start freelancing service. I am having a doubt. What information should I ask for from my client in order to make a perfect tech pack. Is he going to provide me with sample garment measurements, cost sheet, fabric Type, color code etc?

      Thanks for watching and commenting. Unless you are doing the designs, the client should provide you with most of the info. A lot of the time, though, you'll have to ask them for it. I would suggest going thru the tech pack template and making sure you have everything you need, especially for the BOM: fabric, mill, mill code, fiber content, colors, trims, supplier, trim supplier codes. You may want to just go thru it with them during your consultation, or let them go thru the info they have, and then you ask them questions about any info you're still missing. For fabric and trim placement, the client should tell you where they want it to go. Note that some clients may rely on you to fill out certain things, believing that you'd have an intuitive idea of where things should be placed or where things should go based on your experience. But don't be afraid to ask them. Ultimately, they should really be the one advising YOU where things should go. They can ask for your opinion of what you think is best based on your expertise, but they should really be decided what they want for their design. Cost sheet is not something you'd need to fill out. For the measurements, if you are including a spec sheet as part of your tech pack services, you should definitely ask the client for a sample you can measure.

      @@383design Thank you so much for replying. I was so confused about it. I've been asking this question to many people but literally no one gave me a perfect answer like u did. I really appreciate you taking the time to reply and explain in such a detail.
